Background

Many Allied Nations are currently re-evaluating the live-synthetic balance of their operational training in order to address issues such as security, airspace and asset availability, frequency, cost, and environmental factors. The growing demand for distributed training in a synthetic environment is expected to exceed Allies’ current training capabilities in the Air and Maritime domain. Over recent years, the NMSG has matured the technologies and developed the necessary architectures and standards that enable realistic cross-domain distributed synthetic training. The results of the NMSG’s work open new possibilities for Allies and NATO to transition these technologies into effective operational capabilities for the warfighter. Successfully fielding synthetic training across domains would bring tremendous operational benefits. Under the umbrella of the STB/CNAD joint strategic initiative on Achieving and Accelerating Capability Development and Delivery (A2CD2), the NMSG is working towards the goal of delivering Distributed Synthetic Training by establishing a Joint Mission Training through Distributed Simulation (MTDS) capability.

Objectives

The objective is to support the DST related efforts in the framework of the CNAD-STB A2CD2 strategic initiative. To accelerate establishing a cross-functional DST working, the NMSG volunteered to take the initial lead. Key objectives are the preparation of the senior-level workshop at NATO HQ, establishment of the DST working group, compilation of operational needs and drafting of an initial DST roadmap.
